State of the City open thread
This will be an open thread for today's State of the City address.
I'll be videotaping the address and should have the video posted by mid-afternoon.
Speculations: 1. The word at City Hall is that Community Services Coordinator, Ted "you're doing a heck of a job" Cutsumpas Wayne Sheppard will be named Mayor Boughton's new Chief of Staff. Based on the response from mayor at the last Community Forum two weeks ago, it seems like Cutsumpas' Sheppard's pay rate will be lower than McLachlan as well as his responsibilities. 2. Speculation on how the city will handle grant agencies might come up in the speech. 3. With the economy being the number one priority on the minds of most Americans (and the fact that the state is in dire straits), expect the mayor to talk about the state of the city in terms of it's financial stability. With the prospect of the state providing aid to Danbury a remote possibility, next year's budget is going to be rather difficult. 4. With his open space pledge being one of his priorities in his speech last year, expect an update on his progress (i.e., Taylor Farm). 5. Expect Boughton to talk about Danbury being named the one of the safest cities in the country (which doesn't explain his desire for 287g, but that's another matter). Has Boughton kept his promises...you decide When it comes to ANY politicians, you have to question EVERYTHING you hear. On September 26, 2007, ten plaintiffs filed suit in response to an arrest of aday laborers at a public park in Danbury, Connecticut. Plaintiffs amended their complaint on November 26, 2007.
The amended complaint states that plaintiffs sought to remedy the continued discriminatory and unauthorized enforcement of federal immigration laws against the Latino residents of the City of Danbury by Danbury's mayor and its police department.
Plaintiffs allege that the arrests violated their Fourth Amendment rights and the Connecticut Constitution because defendants conducted the arrests without valid warrants, in the absence of exigent circumstances, and without probable cause to believe that plaintiffs were engaged in unlawful activity. In addition, plaintiffs allege that defendants improperly stopped, detained, investigated, searched and arrested plaintiffs. Plaintiffs also allege that defendants violated their Fourteenth Amendment rights when they intentionally targeted plaintiffs, and arrested and detained them on the basis of their race, ethnicity and perceived national origin. Plaintiffs raise First Amendment, Due Process and tort claims.
Plaintiffs request declaratory relief, damages and attorneys fees.
