HatCityBLOG EXCLUSIVE: 2009 State of the City Address
Time: 2:04 PM
From yesterday, here's the 2009 State of the City Address.
LITCHFIELD TIMES: Mark Boughton established gubernatorial exploratory committee; will make decision on running after X-MAS
Time: 4:54 PM
Here's what the Litchfield Times had to say.
Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton, who has established an exploratory committee for a run for the Republican gubernatorial nomination, said if he had been in the state's top elected office he would have enacted a "line item veto" of the $37.6 billion two-year state budget that became law in late summer. Also, he would have provided "some direction to the Legislature on where I thought the major issues were.

The governor [Rell] announced last month that she would not seek a second full term in office and would retire in January 2011.
[...]
Mr. Boughton said he plans to make a decision by Christmas on whether to seek the Republican gubernatorial nomination.
Everyone knows that Boughton is going to throw his hat into the race...and it makes sense. With candidates like Michael Fedele and Tom Foley, unlike the Democratic line-up for governor, the Republican picks are slim to say the least.
That being said, one needs to remember that there is a world of difference between running for a municipality that masquerades itself as a city and running for state-wide office. For example, the chances in an anti-immigrant mayor winning capturing votes in large voting blocs (Hartford, New Haven, Stamford, Bridgeport New London) are laughable at best. Although Boughton will try to tout himself as a moderate Republican, I'm sure there are many organizations and activists who will be VERY vocal in saying otherwise.
In any event, with the possibility of four candidates from Fairfield county going after the state's top post (Marconi, Malloy, Boughton Lamont), 2010 is shaping up to be a very interesting year.
CT SEN: Cappiello cashes in his morality for $280,000
Time: 3:11 PM
With money to burn, the women who brought simulated rape, public sex and necrophilia to millions of television screens proved that at 280,000, anyone's sense of morality can be bought.
...for instance, take former State Sen David Cappiello.
Former World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Linda McMahon (R) is paying her campaign manager, David Cappiello, a salary of about $280,000 -- possibly a record for campaigns in Connecticut.
[...]
"The Connecticut Senate race is one of the highest-profile races in the country, and he brings to this campaign an extensive network of relationships, an intimate knowledge of the state and substantial political experience," said a McMahon campaign official, who confirmed Cappiello's pre-tax salary.
I'd expect more dignity from someone of Cappiello's character but then again, this is the same man who had no problem taking dirty money.
CT-GOV: Rudy Marconi campaign launched public campaign finance ad
Time: 11:55 AM
Today, the Rudy Marconi campaign released a satirical ad that takes aim at the Connecticut Citizen Election Program.
Entitled "Governor's Mansion For Sale," Marconi pledges to enter the campaign finance program and calls on the other challengers in the gubernatorial race to do the same.
Update coming soon...
Time: 2:07 PM
I'll update everyone on what happened during yesterday's hearing soon. Lets just say that when it comes the word "bizarre," McGowan lives up to the definition.
...more to come.

Yesterday, Congressman Luis V. Gutierrez (D-IL) introduced the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity Act of 2009 (CIR ASAP). The bill includes
Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives, led by Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, introduced Tuesday a “historic” bill for comprehensive immigration reform that would allow millions of undocumented aliens to be legalized.
During a press conference at which supporters chanted “Yes we can!” Gutierrez repeated his message that reforming the U.S. immigration system is urgent.
“We’ve waited long enough,” he said. “Just because we’ve been patient doesn’t mean we can wait forever.”
“This bill should be the immigration policy of our country...it’s not complicated. It’s pro-family, pro-jobs and pro-security,” he said of the 700-page text.
Gutierrez expressed confidence that the bill, which will probably be debated in February or March 2010, will win Republican support. For now, all 87 of his co-sponsors are Democrats.
“There is no right or wrong time (to present the bill), there’s just a moral obligation,” said Rep. Nydia Velasquez (D-N.Y.), leader of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
This is not the only immigration bill being toss around in Congress. On the senate side, Senators Charles Schumer and Lindsey Graham are also working on an immigration reform bill and will probably unveil their plan in late January.
UPDATE: Fight delayed?
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has privately told her politically vulnerable Democratic members that they will not vote on controversial bills in 2010 unless the Senate acts first.
After a year of bruising legislative victories that some political analysts believe have done more to jeopardize her majority than to entrench it, Pelosi is shifting gears for the 2010 election.
The Speaker recently assured her freshman lawmakers and other vulnerable members of her caucus that a vote on immigration reform is not looming despite a renewed push from the White House and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. The House will not move on the issue until the upper chamber passes a bill, Pelosi told the members.

“The Speaker has told members in meetings that we’ve done our jobs,” a Democratic leadership aide said. “And that next year the Senate’s going to have to prove what it can accomplish before we go sticking our necks out any further.”
Complaints on boot program on the rise
Time: 6:17 PM
For the last 2 weeks, I've been researching on VioAlert, the company behind the boot program whose history...and lets just say that their practice is shady at best.
Here's a screen shot of one resident's message to Mayor Boughton (via twitter) about the program.
Trust me, this is not the only person who's giving Mayor Boughton an earful about the program. I'm hearing reports on boots being placed on cars on private property as well as one incident where a woman's car was booted while she was out at 11PM and was stuck without a means to get home.
I'm almost done with my write-up on VioAlert and I'll post it soon.
