Newtown Dems call Lieberman presence an "embarrassment" if he attended Labor Day parade

Attaboy Newtown Dems!
Democrats in Newtown have made it Lie clear to Joe Lieberman that it would be an "embarrassment" to have him march with them in the town's Labor Day Parade Monday.

"He's running as an independent, let him march as an independent," said Newtown's First Selectman Herb Rosenthal, a Democrat who gave Lieberman's office the word that he would not be welcomed marching with the other Democrats.

An invitation had gone out to Lieberman to march with the Democrats in error and it fell on Rosenthal's shoulders to call the senator and tell him he wasn't welcomed.

"I let him know that he would not be welcome to march with me," Rosenthal said. "He wouldn't be coming because he is a U.S. Senator. He'd be coming because he's a candidate."

Rosenthal said Lieberman has been invited to march every year for the last nine years and only came one time over those years and that was before 2000.

[...]

Ned Lamont, the Democratic Party's nominated candidate, will be marching in the parade.

(hat tip to 3BK for alerting me to the article. It's rare when you actually find news in the Danbury News-Times).

UPDATE: Note to News-Times crew. If you begin to see a spike in your traffic, you can thank this guy who linked to my post.

Has Mayor Boughton and the Republicans gone too far and when will the News-Times report on the real news?

Time: 2:14 PM

As I stated earlier, this site is going to get serious very soon as I'm going to focus more of my energy (and talent) into exposing the serious problems facing this city as the local media simply fails to inform the public on what's happening politically in the area

You see, the News-Times has failed this community as it doesn't consistantly report on local politics. Time and time again, things go on politically in this area without any reporting or oversight and it simply has to stop. The media has a responsibility to inform the public about the activities of our government whether it's at the federal, state, or local level. Unfortunately, the News-Times doesn't seem to get the point.

When's the last time you read about a Common Council meeting? How about an EIC meeting? Board of Ed meeting? Planning and Zoning? How about an article about anything happening in local government that might be of interest to the public? When it comes to the News-Times, you get little of no local hard news stories and more "feature" stories and endless AP articles. It makes you wonder if the reporters are allowed to leave their desks.

Where am I going with this...okay, I'll get to the point.

After years of collecting material, I'm ready to start showing people the stuff the newspapers fail to do which is report on what's happening in the area and hopefully, you, the reader, will be better informed. From Mayor Boughton, Pauline Basso and the Republican-controlled Common Council, to the Democratic Party, immigrants, and apathetic voters, no one will be spared from my reporting. Trust me, I have no problem going after anyone whether it's a liberal or conservative so don't be fooled, my only interest is informing the public.

On that note, lets begin with the top dog in town, Mayor Boughton and the Republican majority. Lately some of the Mayor's decisions (backed by the Republicans) have REALLY angered Democrats and even left a couple of his most popular defenders scratching their heads.

I'll let the video tell the story.

Interesting huh?

Now just think about this for a second.

• The Mayor and Republican majority blocked the Democrats from putting something on the Common Council agenda?

• The broadcasting of government meetings are too expensive yet a doggie park is okay?

Notice any of this irony addressed in a News-Times editorial? Did you even hear about any part of the August Common Council meeting in the News-Times?

You get my point. As long as YOU are not informed, politicans can say AND get away with just about anything in this area. In the end, WE all lose.

Like I said before, certain people are now on notice and I'm not kidding.

Is the Danbury News-Times on the chopping block?

Monday, August 28, 2006
Time: 12:59 PM

Seems like Dow Jones & Co. is considering selling several of it's Ottaway newspapers and the Danbury News-Times is on the list.
Dow Jones & Co., publisher of The Wall Street Journal, said today it is exploring the possible sale of some of its Ottaway community newspapers in six markets.

The company said potential deals would raise cash to repay debt and for investment in current businesses. It also said it would consider exchanging the newspapers for other community papers.

The newspapers are in Danbury, Conn.; Oneonta, N.Y.; Plattsburg, N.Y.; Santa Cruz, Calif.; Sunbury, Pa.; and Traverse City, MI.
Here's what the News-Times had to say about the possible sale.
Readers should not notice any changes to The News-Times in the upcoming months due to its possible sale, said the newspaper’s publisher Sam Gett.

"It’s transparent for the reader," Gett said.

[...]

Gett said The News-Times would continue focusing on increasing its Internet content, readership and advertising revenue.

Last month, the newsroom implemented several changes, including changing reporters’ beats, adding transportation and business coverage, adding reporter blogs and columns, and focusing on more regional coverage.

On September 26, 2007, ten plaintiffs filed suit in response to an arrest of aday laborers at a public park in Danbury, Connecticut. Plaintiffs amended their complaint on November 26, 2007.

The amended complaint states that plaintiffs sought to remedy the continued discriminatory and unauthorized enforcement of federal immigration laws against the Latino residents of the City of Danbury by Danbury's mayor and its police department.

Plaintiffs allege that the arrests violated their Fourth Amendment rights and the Connecticut Constitution because defendants conducted the arrests without valid warrants, in the absence of exigent circumstances, and without probable cause to believe that plaintiffs were engaged in unlawful activity. In addition, plaintiffs allege that defendants improperly stopped, detained, investigated, searched and arrested plaintiffs. Plaintiffs also allege that defendants violated their Fourteenth Amendment rights when they intentionally targeted plaintiffs, and arrested and detained them on the basis of their race, ethnicity and perceived national origin. Plaintiffs raise First Amendment, Due Process and tort claims.

Plaintiffs request declaratory relief, damages and attorneys fees.
